ABOUT

Welcome to the darling of _SOUTHSTART // ODYSSEY. Nestled amongst the rolling vineyards of Lake Breeze Wines, we’ll be whisking away our attendees for a day well spent in the heart and soul of Langhorne Creek. Starting the day on a bus ride hosted by a special selection of inspiring folk, attendees will connect with friends - old and new - before arriving to VILLAGE - a land of possibility. We’ll gather as a collective in the morning, celebrating the custodians of the land upon which we gather, in both ceremony and conversation. From there, you will be free to roam as you please - across a sprawl of areas designed to showcase the breadth of opportunities that surround creation. Whether you're looking for investment, mentorship, employment, education or just a good serving of inspiration - there will be place to discover, learn and explore. Think conversations, office hours, food trucks, picnic areas, provocations & more. Sharing journeys of triumph and hardship, exposing new developments and uncovering the opportunities that lie within our collective future.

There is an underlying discomfort in the embrace of conversations that dive deep into the problems being faced by animals & planet. Perhaps this could be attributed to the overwhelm that results from exploring how our human-made societal structures, and attitudes around wealth, have played in this narrative. So, how do we best navigate the path ahead? How can we come together, and truly mobilise our collective privilege, for good, to move forward? How can we think more deeply about those who are not privy to the comfort of a home? How can we support those who truly need it? Join us for a deep conversation, shared amongst esteemed voices, as we explore the importance of insuring that "Australia's Opportunity" includes a narrative around giving. We'll discuss the importance of philanthropy and the impact it can have on society.

Humans & Culture are integral to startups, so it's important to nurture the community around us. Abandoning stability for the uncertain world of entrepreneurialism comes with a level of calculated risk; balanced out by the stability that a support network can bring. But how do we navigate the relationships that are critical to the startup journey? Where do you go to connect to people? How do we recognise who is missing, and create pathways for inclusion? Join us for a deep dive into a word that holds perhaps the most powerful weight in a startup's journey: community. We’ll explore what and where it is, and perhaps what it isn’t (...yet).

We are on the cusp of a RealTimeInternet one where computing experiences don't exist until we invoke them at which point they will be generated by AI. Not just images or sites but even sophisticated apps. This is a sea change as great as those a decade ago catalyzed by the creation of the internet. As designers, engineers & creatives of this era we have spent most of our career closing the value gaps in that last sea change when we adopted handheld mobile computing. So how do we cope with this moment? Well let’s begin with vision and a frank discussion of humanity & this new family of technologies that insists they are Help for Humans. Then let’s talk about how we can use them in a way that continues the record of technology improving humanity.

How do we survive, let alone thrive, in the fast-paced nature of innovation & acceleration into the future? What are some ways in which we can “embrace our innate human condition” in our day-to-day, while understanding that this looks different to all? Mental performance; is it the same as peak performance? If we removed financial pressures, and the “need” to work .. would we still? What would that look like? Join us for a deep time into the complexity of the human mind, and how it connects (or is disconnected) to the current societal systems in which we play.

Imagine if we started again. Rebuilding our food, healthcare, manufacturing, and energy systems using nature. No more extracting, and burning earth’s natural resources, but instead harnessing nature to make useful, better quality, more sustainable products. Food, medicines, materials, energy that are co-designed with nature not by destroying it. Marrying nature's design principles with human technological capability represents a huge business opportunity, it offers us a chance as a society to transform and build a sustainable future. Led by Sally-Ann Williams, CEO of Cicada Innovations, along with a panel of deep tech innovators this session will be asking 'How can we design systems guided and powered by nature to revolutionise food production, medicines, materials and energy?', and showcasing some of the ways Australian startups are co-designing with nature.

In this discussion, we'll imagine a world where we've achieved a Net Zero reality and explore the fundamental steps we took to get there, the challenges we faced, and the systems we removed (and added) to society. We'll re-examine human-first concepts of money, values, localism and how to effect radical change, and collaboration, in circumnavigating a tragedy of the commons. Led by Climate Salad, this immersive session will take you on an engaging and informative journey through the intersection of science, humanity, environment, capital, technology - and everything in between.
